Saving Memories

Well, I am sad tonight. My baby turned 3 this week. Okay, my oldest child turned 3, but still, he's my baby. It's amazing how fast his life has progressed. He is an amazing child and I can't wait to see the amazing man he will become. . .but, for tonight I will miss the stages past of nursing, learning to crawl and walk and that first amazing smile. I will enjoy all the "squeezes" and kisses and the all "I love you Mommy"s I can get, for I know this stage, too, shall pass.

As always, Happy Savings!

Saving Time Cooking

My family LOVES pasta. We could eat it every meal. Today I am going to share one of my family's favorite quick and easy pasta dishes.

Baked Ziti

1 Box Penne Pasta, cooked and drained
2 Jars Pasta Sauce of your choice
2 C Mozzarella Cheese
Parmesan Cheese

Mix cooked penne and 1 jar of pasta sauce in a 9x13 dish. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes. Add 1/2 Mozzarella Cheese, stir. Sprinkle remaining cheese on top. Place back in oven for 15 minutes or until cheese on top is melted. After removing it from the oven and serving, let everyone add as much warmed pasta sauce from the other jar as they want and sprinkle Parmesan cheese on top to taste.

Serve with a salad and my family's favorite, peaches, and you have a complete meal that took little more than stirring pasta!

Have a family favorite pasta dish you'd like to share? Leave a comment so we can all enjoy!

Saving Time Cooking

Okay, I have another confession to make. I LOVE to eat, but I usually HATE spending time in the kitchen cooking (sometimes I get it in my head to make fancy, complicated meals, but not recently, I blame my 2 wonderful boys!). Because of this I have gathered a large collection of quick, easy meals that I can draw from when I realize it's 4:30 and I haven't even thought about dinner yet. One of my friends told me I should start a weekly posting featuring 1 of these recipes, so here goes my 1st Saving Time Cooking Post!

Chicken and Stuffing

3 or 4 Chicken Breasts, cut to bite size pieces
1 box of chicken flavored stuffing mix, prepared to box instructions
1 can Cream of Chicken Soup (reduced fat works fine too)
1/3 C low fat sour cream

Cook chicken in a skillet (I use a 10" one that has a lid so I can do everything in it and Save Time doing less dishes) while making the stuffing in another pot. When chicken is cooked, (or almost cooked) add the soup and sour cream, stir until well mixed. Top with stuffing and cover with lid. Allow to simmer for 10 minutes to get the flavors all meshed together. Serve and enjoy!

I usually serve this with Broccoli (although, I usually serve most everything with broccoli, it's our favorite veggie around the Saving Sherry household). If you want you can actually add broccoli (or any frozen veggies) to the dish when you add the soup and sour cream, just cook until the veggies are done.

This is one of my favorite things to throw together because all the ingredients are stuff I usually have on hand anyway. I think I originally got this recipe from the Stove Top Stuffing box, but I can't promise that. I've seen many variations on this over the years like adding veggies, different flavor soups, cheese, and even putting it in the oven instead of making it on the stove.

This is my favorite version, try it and see what you like with it or in it!

Do you have any quick, easy recipes you'd like to see featured in a future edition of Saving Time Cooking? Leave the recipe in the comments section and let us all save time trying your favorite recipe!

Saving Money with Meijer Deals

Okay, so Meijer is doing soooo many "buy this and get $X.XX off that" deals I thought I'd list them all in one post before I do my Weekly Round-Up. It's getting insane at Meijer and I can't keep track of all the deals myself so typing them out for you will really help me. Here they all are (I think):

Coke (Deal ends 9/13)
-Buy $10 of Coke products and get $10 off any pair of men's, women's or children's athletic shoes ( shoes are on sale 20- 30% off this week)
-Powerade is a Coke product, so if you have any $1 off Powerade coupons left from the 7/13 SS you can use these toward your Coke total

Pepsi (Deal ends 9/13)
-Buy $10 of Pepsi products and get $10 off any pair of men's, women's or children's blue jeans (does anyone know why they list men's, women's or children's for everything? why don't they just say "all"? are alien blue jeans and athletic shoes not included?)
-Pepsi 24 packs are $3.99 this week but ONLY when you buy 4, so you spend $16 on Pepsi to get your $10 off blue jeans, $3.99 is not the BEST deal on Pepsi, but if you need jeans, it's good.

Post Cereal (This week only)
-Buy any 3 Post cereals listed in this add (add includes Grape Nuts 32 oz, Raisin Bran 25 oz, Honey Bunches of Oats Almond or Honey Roasted 19 oz, Honeycomb 18.5 oz or Cocoa or Fruity Pebbles 17 oz (all at 3/$7)) and get $3 off one Meijer Gallon Milk (excluded chocolate and Organic)
-Milk is only $2.50 this week, so why they put $3 is beyond me (I know milk is priced different in different markets, but if they're changing the price of milk in the add, can't they change the amount you get free too?). Anyway, that means after the cereal, your milk is free.
-There are coupons to help you out with this deal including the $1/2 Post cereal coupons in the 7/27 SS

Kellogg (Deal ends 9/13)
- Buy $10 of any Kellogg products and get $10 off a backpack (backpacks are on sale 30% off this week)
-Pop Tarts are on sale 3/$4 this week and there were $1/2 coupons in the 8/3 Kellogg insert
-Eggo Waffles are $1.15 and there were $1/2 coupons in the 8/3 Kellogg insert
-Bonus: in the Keebler/Kellogg Fuel for School booklet (found in stores by Keeber and Kellogg back to school display) there was a coupon for $2 off any variety of milk when you buy Pop Tarts and Eggos
-I'm told there are SEVERAL back packs priced at $10 or less

Nabisco (Deal ends 9/13)
- Buy $10 of any combination of Nabisco cookies or crackers and get $10 off 3 packages of Fruit of the Loom Basics for the family (socks, underwear and t-shirts)
-You can use the coupons for Free Wheat Thins found in the All You Magazine to get your $10 of Nabisco products for free and you will only have to pay for the remaining balance of the Fruit of the Loom

-All of these deals are done automatically at the register (be sure to check your receipt or watch as the items are being scanned to make sure the money comes off, mistakes do happen). All of the $10 required totals are BEFORE coupons, so if you buy 8 boxes of Pop Tarts and your total is $10.xx you get the deal, then they subtract your coupons so you are only paying $6.xx oop for your Pop Tarts. They are also limit 1 per transaction. That doesn't mean you can only do 1 deal per transaction, only 1 of EACH deal per transactions (i.e. 1 Pepsi deal and 1 Coke deal is okay, you can't do 2 Pepsi deals). Keep in mind, you can do as many transactions between now and when the deal is over that you want. Have 3 kids and need 3 backpacks? Do the Kellogg deal 3 times. There is no limit per person, only per transaction.

Have questions or better coupon match-ups than I found? Please leave a comment.

Saving Time Doing Laundry

Okay, I'll admit it. I sometimes forget to start the laundry, realize it's 10:30 at night and I needed to get 3 loads done that day. I'm horrible about that! If I can just get the first load started, I'm usually okay and can do the rest. When I get up in the morning, I sometimes think about it, but I'm taking care of getting the boys fed and getting diapers changed and I feel like I don't have time at that moment to go upstairs and get a load of laundry. Then I just forget.

I recently discovered a trick to help me get that first load going. I put a load of laundry in the washer at night before I go to bed! No, I don't turn it on, I don't add detergent and I don't even close the lid. I just put the clothes in the washer so that in the morning it will only take me a few seconds to get a load going.

I told my friend who is a working mom about my new tactic and she said that if she starts a load in the morning, by the time she gets home it already has that gross smell to it. I suggested she put the load in before bed like me and start it when she gets home from work.

I think this is a great idea and I'm going to try to stick with it. Even if I only get that load washed that day, that's 1 load of clean clothes! Now, if I could just come up with a time saving way to fold them and put them away. . .

Saving Money at Meijer

My friend Pam told me about a sale at Meijer that I completely overlooked in my Round-Up! Meijer has Mrs. T's Pierogies 1/2 price this week and there are $1 coupons in the 6/1 and 7/13 RP. (Edit, it's been brought to my attention that coupons.com took off the Mrs. T's link, so I am deleting it from the post.) That makes the breakdown like this:

$1.34 1 box Mrs. T Pierogies 1/2 price
-$1 coupon
Total oop:
$.34!!!

That's an awesome price. I like the Potato and Cheddar variety and my husband likes the Heat and Eat variety in Creamy Garlic Butter Sauce to take to work for his lunch. Can't beat a $.34 lunch!

Saving Sanity With Museum Passes

We went to the museum today. It was wonderful. They boys had a great time playing. Drew and Blake (my friends' little boy I babysit, he's 2) only really fought over shovels in the rock (foam rock) area which means it was a very good day. We really needed the break from our normal routine. They love all the new toys, new games and especially the new people to play with.

The Cincinnati Museum Center passes are an annual thing we have been doing in our family. They really are a great investment. Our passes go on sale the weekend before Christmas for B1G1. We found friends that want to get a membership too and we each only paid half price, just $70 for the museum and parking for an entire year! The passes reciprocate to over 150 other museums in the US, meaning when we travel we just check to see if there is a museum in the area on our list and we can take the kids for FREE!

If you live in the Cincinnati Area, check out the Museum Center here. If you live elsewhere, be sure to check out museums in your area. It's a great change of pace for the kids, and they are learning as they play!

Make your house smell better while still Saving Time

If you're like me and you have small children, your house probably smells something like mine does, yucky! I am a huge user of Fabreeze, but sometimes when company is coming over or it's been an especially stinky day I like to put dryer sheets under my air vents. This is something I started doing in college when I lived in the dorms. It makes everything smell clean and fresh. I've also heard of people stuffing old panty hose with potpourri and putting that in their air ducts. Do you have any quick and easy tips to make your house smell good? Leave your tips in the comments area. I'm always looking for ways to make the dirty diaper smell go away!

Saving Money at Panera

Thanks to my friends at CincyMoms.com I have learned that Panera is giving away their new breakfast sandwiches! If you live in the Cincinnati area all you have to do is go to your nearest Panera before 10:30 and donate a non-perishable food item. (All donations benefit the Freestore Foodbank.) This runs today through August 17! I love free food!

Saving Sanity on Road Trips

As I have mentioned before, my husband and I have an (almost) 3 year old. We do not have any family in town and we have to travel at least 2 hours to get to the nearest grandparent. Drew is a very high energy child and I'm not sure he knows the meaning of the phrase "sit still". Road trips were fine until he was about 16 months old, then they became scream fests. I told Rob we needed to buy a portable DVD player. Rob felt we didn't need one, he felt that Drew needed to learn to ride in the car and use his imagination to amuse himself.

I bought a portable DVD player. I know, a wife should submit to her husband, but he was just plain wrong on this one. (He even admits this now.) We used it for every car trip to the grandparents for about a year. It was lovely. Now he can amuse himself and we don't usually use it and we never start the trip with it out.

I guess the moral of this post is if you have a high energy toddler who loves to watch Backyardagains and Blue's Clues a portable DVD player will save your sanity if you spend much time traveling. I'll have to post later how it saved our trip to California for my brother-in-laws wedding. I think I actually may have kissed that thing!

Hello World

Hello everyone and welcome to my new blog. I'm Sherry.

I named my blog Saving Sherry because this blog is (hopefully) going to:

1. Save Sherry's Money (shopping tips and coupon techniques)

2. Save Sherry's Time (tips to cooks, clean and anything else I can find, faster)

3. Save Sherry's Sanity (tips about most everything else)

I am a Christian, a wife to my amazing husband, Rob, a mother to my beautiful, wonderful boys, Drew (3, this month) and Jake (7 months). My college degree says that I am a Music Teacher but my real job is staying home with those wonderful boys and raising them to the best of my ability. Life is full and interesting. We are never bored in our house!

Well, that's the quick intro to me. I hope that you stick around with me and that not only will this site help Save Sherry, but help save you too!
